30 Days Hath November (Day 26)

Day 26: Something I'm looking forward to.

Where to start...

I'm looking forward to next Friday, as it is my Friday off work.

I'm looking forward to New Years Day. As it is Mrs7t's birthday we have big plans!

I'm looking forward to each and every day with Matilda, watching her learn and grow. I'm looking forward to taking her to Snowdon, teaching her how to cook. I'm hoping that she will get the running bug from us I'm looking forward to introducing her to our music libraries and hearing her say that is old people's music! I'm looking forward to learning from her, as adults we think we know best. It is not always true. I'm looking forward to sitting down as a family to watch movies (she'll probably think that we are old fashioned for having them all on DVD and dare I say it.... videotape). I'm looking forward to maybe one day introducing her to a sibling. I'm looking forward to her reading this blog (I hope she likes it - Hello Lime).

I think I'll leave it there... there are too many things that could end up here, and I don't want to go too far off into the future. One day at a time is fine for me.

30 Days Hath November (Day 25)

Day 25: The contents of my purse.

I don't have a purse or a wallet. WHat I do have is a bunch of cards bound together with an elastic band. Cheap? Yes. Great idea? For me, yes.

Contents:
Oyster card
Debit Cards
Caffe Nero Loyalty Card
Driving Licence

If I ever have any paper money I tuck it under the elastic band.

30 Days Hath November (Day 24)

Day 24: Something that means a lot to me.

If I put all of the obvious things (family etc) aside I'm not left with a lot.

One thing would be veganism / ovo-vegetarianism. I may have said this elsewhere, but I do swing between the two from day to day. I feel happiest when I have a vegan day.

30 Days Hath November (Day 23)

Day 23: Eight things you didn't know about me.

I feel guilty about all the animals that have been killed or exploited in my name (for food, shoes, belts, pillows... everything)

I LOVE Marmite.

I'm sick of working and want to retire.

I don't like making phone calls.

I visit the parkrun website every single day, even if I have no reason to do so.

People walk too slowly. They get in my way. I get angry at them. (this may be a generalisation)

I hate the fact that the spell check on my computers always wants me to change my English spellings to their American equivalent.

I was on this plane (see photo below). I didn't want to fly before this and now it is the perfect excuse for me to avoid flying. It's not that I haven't enjoyed the experience of flying, the speed and power you feel during take off is incredible!

30 Days Hath November (Day 20)

Day 20: A childhood anecdote.

I can't remember the exact year, but it must have been early eighties. We were on holiday in butlins at, I think, Minehead. One morning I remember that my Dad woke me up really early in the morning and suggested we go exploring while everyone else was asleep. We went through the holiday camp, through some bushes, through a hole in a fence (I remember it as a hole, but it may have been a bonafide entry/exit point), across a small road and onto the beach where we walked around and explored. My Dad had his Pentax SLR camera with him so he also took some photos (see below). I remember the dew on the grass and the slight freshness in the air, it was an amazing morning.

30 Days Hath November (Day 16)

Day 16: Someone who inspires me.

I wouldn't say that I am inspired by one single person in every area of my life.

I find that inspiration can comes from anywhere..

Maybe I'll see a person with a disability going about his/her daily business without fussing or complaining, or maybe I will see or hear about someone doing a selfless act. Things like this inspire me.

I feel that I lacked inspiration with this post.

30 Days Hath November (Day 15)

Day 15:

My style inspiration... blah..

uhm... would probably involve someone with a beard.

I like beards... It's a shame that mine doesn't really grow properly.

Will that do?

30 Days Hath November (Day 14)

Day 14: A favourite movie.

(favourite is probably not the correct word for this movie...)

I'm going to skip the usual entertainment type hollywood movie film and go for one that was truly life changing. In fact the whole film is available online for you to watch, maybe it'll change your life, maybe you'll block it all out and carry on regardless.

The film is 'Earthlings'.

Warning: This film contains footage that you may find distressing.

30 Days Hath November (Day 13)

Day 13: Something I'm proud of.

This has been the most difficult '30DHN' post to write so far. Not in terms of what/who I feel most proud of, but in wording it in a way that gets across just how proud I am. Let's see how it goes...

There are certain elements of parenting where the western world has lost its way. Many things that our society sees as acceptable and normal are completely at odds with how human beings (and many other mammals) have behaved for the last million or so years.

Take the most basic of tasks - feeding. A human mother produces milk for the human baby. Not only does the mother produce this milk, it is specifically designed for the needs of that baby, and will adjust as required from day to day, even hour to hour. There are an unlist-able amount of other benefits to breastfeeding. Yet, so many mothers do not breastfeed their babies for very long, and some do not even try. This is mostly through lack of support/knowledge or because of the western world's strange concept of 'getting your life/body back' - as if being a mother is somehow not worthwhile.

Another area is that of sleeping. Again, in the Western world it is completely normal to want to give the baby their own room to sleep in and to get them into a sleeping routine (through a variety of horrifying techniques) as early as possible. Both at odds with how nature intended it to be. Look at many other mammals and you'll see them sleeping close together, not pushing their babies into the next patch of trees.

So to get to the point of the post, the person that I am most proud of is my wife. This is for taking the time to educate herself, not only on the issues above, but on the many other things that I would never have thought of. Through her own desire to provide the best possible start for the babashe has made me a better (or at least a better informed) person. If she hadn't put so much effort into educating herself we could easily have been guided (possibly by people with other agendas) down the road of least resistance.

I'm proud of her for sticking to what she (and I) believes is the right thing to do, even when those around her are making different decisions. This is especially relevant in the fact that she is still breastfeeding, even though the baba is over a year old and many people in our society (the uninformed) view this is wrong.

She is also now involved, on a voluntarily basis, with providing breastfeeding support to new mums through the breast-buddy scheme.

I feel like I have somehow not said everything that there is to say.. but I am very lucky to have such an amazing person in my life.

She may not realise it yet, but Lime is a very lucky baba.

It says three, I say three-ish.

A Lime Less Ordinary - It is written by Mrs7t and features my daughter. What's not to like?

Life to her Years - Very sweet photos and wise words for fathers.

The Kitten Covers - Famous LP covers with a twist of kitten.

They say life begins at forty - Welcome to the first year of my life - A personal blog written by the wonderful Nicki from Riddlesdown parkrun!

Scooby's Home Workouts - Scooby gives the best advice I've come across in the area of bodybuilding. (I know I'm not a bodybuilder, but it's rare to find someone doing what he does for the good of the community). He also produces some quite amusing videos.

I can't remember exactly what we did, but there were almost certainly fireworks in the background. We have searched through our photos and cannot find one from November 2008.

We were not married (or engaged).
We did not yet have our little Lime.

Night time cuddles

We co-sleep. The three of us. In the big bed.

Matilda stays in between us during the night but ultimately ends up closer to Dani because she has the whole motherly thing going on and that's where the milk is.

Last night something very rare happened. Matilda snuggled up to me, and with my arm under her she fell back to sleep. I don't know exactly how long we were like this. I could have been minutes or it could have been over an hour.

It was (and is) a truly amazing thing that I would never experience if we were to force her out of our bed and make her sleep in her own room. Where she would be all alone, feeling abandoned and scared.

------------------------

Matilda, you can stay in the big bed for as long as you like, and you can snuggle with whichever one of us you choose to. I know that it will mostly be Mummy, but every now and then roll over and hug the papa (it makes him very happy). ksks.

30 Days Hath November (Day 02)

With this blog being all about parental and family things, I've decided to keep the quotes related to that.

Day 02: Three inspirational quotes.

Certain is it that there is no kind of affection so purely angelic as of a father to a daughter. In love to our wives there is desire; to our sons, ambition; but to our daughters there is something which there are no words to express. - Joseph Addison

When I was five years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote 'happy'. They told me I didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand life. - John Lennon

If I had my child to raise all over again, I’d build self-esteem first, and the house later. I’d finger-paint more, and point the finger less. I would do less correcting and more connecting. I’d take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes. I’d take more hikes and fly more kites. I’d stop playing serious, and seriously play. I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars. I’d do more hugging and less tugging. - Diane Loomans
